Many UK home owners today expect energy access via a flick of a switch. It keeps our fridges cold. lights illuminated and homes warm. Yet rarely do we ask the questions how does it reach us? where does it come from? and why is it becoming so expensive? Our domestic power Comes from two main sources - electricity making up 23% of usage and gas makes up of 68%. The remaining 9% of domestic power is made up from sources such as housecoal and woodburners. The reduction of coal consumption as a main base of power consumption has taken a massive twist over recent decades. in the 1970's 39% of household power came from coal now that stands at a measly 1%. Our consumption habits have also changed. We use 12% less energy than we did in 1990 mostly due to new groundbreaking technologies in products such as electric radiators which makes them a lot more energy efficient than they once were. However with an increase in homes compared to previous decades, consequently had seen a total increase of 6% in energy consumption over the same period.
