Over much talk surrounding renewable energy, the big question is how has it been doing here in the UK? It may surprise you that renewable energy contributed to a 5th of our UK power during the first 3 months of 2014. That being a product from rainfall, heavy winds and a surge in wind farm and solar construction. Recent Government figures suggest that renewable energy production saw an increase of 43% in comparison to the first quarter of 2013. Is this so intriguing that we should be calmly jumping up and down, or are we missing something? It's safe to say renewable energy production may be increasing year upon year but it doesn't mean that we will suddenly be clearing a space on the shelf for a really nice award or do away with fracking. The UK did generate 18.1TWh (Terra Watts) in the first quarter of 2014 which is quite impressive considering the backlash received from some of the Governments energy polices. However the reality is that we are still a far reach from Germany (current leaders in renewable energy) who also released very impressive figures for the first half of 2014. Last year was recorded as on of the wettest winters ever seen in the UK, with a whopping 2.2TWh generated through Hydropower! Which is a 78% increase from the first quarter of 2013, making it the highest production during the first quarter in UK history. Onshore wind generation also saw big figures as it also grew 62%. With huge subsidies cuts for large solar farms coming into place by April, we saw a surge in solar construction and as a result added 1.1GW to the grid. Coming to the end of Q1 the UK had installed 20.8GW of renewable technologies seeing an increase of 15% from the same period last year This data was release during the same week that Germany announced that it also performed a record output from renewable energy in the first half of this year, implementing that renewables equate to 28% of Germany's power mix whilst reducing the generation of fossil fuel.
