A latest report from Energy UK shows that many consumers are picking up the trend on purchasing their electricity from smaller energy companies. Energy UK have released figures last week showing that since November 2013 an estimated 100,000 customers switched to smaller energy providers every month. This is fantastic news outlining that consumers shouldn't automatically think they are only going to get the best deal from one of the dominating big six energy companies. It's brilliant to see that there has been a gap for smaller energy firms to squeeze through and give the larger firms something to think about. But ultimately it's perfect news for us, the consumers, that we have companies continuously wrestling each other to offer us competitive deals, especially if they want to keep our custom. Finally I get the impression that the big six no longer have us cornered, with electricity switching across the sector now on the up edging over 225,000 households every month. November 2013 saw the biggest increase in switching last year at a whopping 615,00, showing further promising signs of competitiveness within the industry.
Ed Davey the Energy Secretary said: "We have almost trebled the number of small suppliers since 2010 and our reforms are making it easier and quicker for people to switch energy suppliers - around 2 million consumers have switched to independent suppliers since 2010. Households could save £200 a year or potentially more by switching supplier, and we encourage all consumers to shop around for the best deal for their energy bills."
Interesting however Mr Ed Davey has recently been in the limelight over accusations of green tax avoidance. Then energy secretary is accused after switching to a smaller energy supplier that is exempt from having to pay the controversial green levies. Cleverly Mr Davey could bypass paying at least £50 annually through moving to under the radar firm Green Star Energy, which is small enough that Ed Davey's department explains it doesn't have to pay them. Davey has expressed that small energy suppliers should not be entitled to pay the charges in a helping hand to offer lower energy prices adding further competition into the dismantling of the Big Six grasp. Obviously though if, or should I say when they exceed the limitations then they will be liable to pay. However the Tory MP Peter Lilley and member of the energy select committee told The Mail on Sunday "He is paying less than most people as he is not being hit with those levies, it is as simple as that. He has found a way to avoid this unfair burden on families which his own department is inflicting. It is a form of tax avoidance."
